The VRTEX 360 virtual-reality welding system from Lincoln Electric Co., Cleveland, OH, has earned the 2011 Heinz Sossenheimer Award from the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The award is given every two years in recognition of “innovative software solutions making a decisive contribution to improving the long-term quality and/or safety of applications in the fields of joining, cutting or coating.” Lincoln introduced the VRTEX 360 in 2009 as an educational and training system, to allow students to practice their welding technique in a simulated environment.
