Richard Bayer, president of Bayloff Stamped Products in Van Buren Township, MI, hosted Senator John McCain at his plant for a town hall meeting on July 10. Addressing a large crowd, Sen. McCain focused on the economy and energy. PMA member Jim Zawacki, CEO of GR Spring & Stamping in Grand Rapids, MI, and Wes Smith, president of E&E Manufacturing in Plymouth, MI, asked the senator about trade reform and R&D tax credits. He responded that he believes in free trade, and said that America’s economic success depends greatly on continued innovation. He also said he supports a permanent extension of the R&D tax credit. He talked at length about the need to eliminate dependence on foreign oil and pushed for a diversified approach of domestic drilling, nuclear, wind, solar and battery fuel-cell technology. At a press conference after the event, Sen. McCain also addressed the issue of union card-check and said he supports workers’ right to a secret ballot, a position PMA strongly supports.
