Arizona State University's (ASU) Polytechnic campus is now home to the largest additive manufacturing research facility in the Southwest. The 15,000-sq.-ft center includes more than $2 million of state-of-the-art equipment, including a Concept Laser M2 cusing and Mlab machine for metal 3D printing. These machines are used for a range of R&D activities including alloying development, ceramics direct sintering and acoustic meta-material research, as well as prototyping of complex mechanical components.

The facility results from an ASU partnership with Concept Laser, Honeywell, Stratasys and PADT. Besides equipment, the facility offers advanced processing and analysis capabilities for use by students, faculty and industry partners. “(The center) provides a unique opportunity for us to enhance our industry partnerships, and also provide the capability for us to do additional research and enhance our education programs,” says Ann McKenna, director of the Polytechnic School.

“With so few of these types of centers, this really positions us regionally to be the go-to place that can work with academic partners, federal agencies and industry to advance a new and emerging field.”
