Alcoa Opens Powder-Production Facility

Alcoa has opened a state-of-the-art 3D printing metal powder production facility at its technology center near Pittsburgh, PA. The facility will be used to produce titanium, nickel and aluminum powders. The news comes on the heels of the recently announced partnership between Alcoa and Airbus that will have Alcoa supplying Airbus with 3D printed parts such as titanium fuselages and engine pylon components.

Later this year, Alcoa will spin off a new parts-manufacturing company named Arconic; Arconic also will manage the new powder plant. Arconic also intends to further develop the Ampliforge hybrid-manufacturing technique, which combines additive and traditional manufacturing processes and is being piloted in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
