Aurora Labs Ltd. announced that it has engaged with BAE Systems Maritime Australia to print trial marine components for BAE’s Hunter Class Frigate Program (HCFP).

With BAE Systems Maritime Australia investigating large-scale metal additive manufacturing (AM) as a technology for future adoption, Aurora Labs was identified as a possible provider of laser powder-bed fusion technology to the HCFP. Aurora Labs aims to prove its technical and commercial viability for the project by producing stainless-steel 3D-printed components suitable for servicing the build of nine Future Frigates in Australia for the Royal Australian Navy.

A3D and BAE Systems Maritime Australia have agreed to initial investigative test printing as part of the project's staged evaluation approach to identifying locally available AM processes and their benefits. The component selected for testing currently is produced via traditional manufacturing. Aurora Labs will review the part design and assess its optimized potential within the laser powder-bed fusion process for maritime application.

"We are very pleased to be offered the chance to perform test printing for the HCFP,” says Peter Snowsill, Aurora Labs CEO. “Technical validation of this kind is crucial to our commercialization strategy, and allows us to develop and position our technology to satisfy customer specifications."
