schmersal-bluetooth-light-curtainsNew safety light curtains from Schmersal USA, Hawthorne, NY, now include a Bluetooth interface as a standard feature, available on the firm’s SLC440COM and multifunctional SLC440 series. The light curtains use the Bluetooth Low Energy system for near-field data transmission, which provides secure data transmission up to 5 m. Users can access the transmitted data using the Schmersal SLC Assist app, available for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.

Schmersal officials note that the light curtains with Bluetooth interface complement the needs and demands of a smart factory. Light-curtain status and alerts can route directly to designated personnel once a light curtain has been actuated. The device also can keep track of the number of light-curtain device uses to support preventive-maintenance practices.

“For safety devices that allow programming,” officials add, “it is crucial to be able to identify which program is active, when it was programmed and who performed the programming. That information can be made available with a smartphone or tablet.”
