dexco-ross-die-racks-pennantIn manufacturing, optimizing floor space and reducing machine-turnover time is crucial. When custom metal former Pennant Moldings recently faced challenges in both areas at its Lebanon, TN, plant, due to an insufficient die-storage strategy, it sought a new organizational approach that could transform its operations for the long-term.

The goal: organize its 55 dies scattered across the production floor, and often stacked during idle periods. This cluttered arrangement created daily workflow frustrations while posing risks for die damage and worker safety.

Without an organized system, workers struggled to quickly locate and retrieve specific dies. And, the stacked arrangements required excessive handling, further increasing the risk of damage and slowing operations as a whole

Solution: Efficient Die Storage

After evaluating options from different vendors, the Dexco die-racking setup from Ross Industrial, LLC, Leola, PA, as the clear winner. The plant’s engineers worked alongside Dexco sales engineer Tracy Buck to develop a cost-effective solution that would immediately solve Pennant’s challenges, while providing a foundation for future adjustments.

The Dexco solution consists of a bolt-together configuration that can be installed all at once, simplifying the entire process. Another key advantage: it employs adjustable shelving, which interface directly with Pennant's existing die cart. This provides secure attachment points for pulling dies in and out of storage, enhancing safety and ease of use. The racks also integrated seamlessly with the facility's quick-die-change system, enabling more efficient changeovers.

Measurable Results: Space Optimization and Process Efficiency

Pennant realized immediate and significant improvements with its new die racks. The facility gained more than 2000 sq. ft. floor space, creating a less cluttered and more organized plant. The racks streamlined die transportation, making it faster and safer and reducing machine turnover times by as much as 20 min. It also eliminated the need to move multiple dies in order to locate the correct one, improving workflow efficiency. This reduction in die handling not only enhanced productivity, but also significantly decreased the risk of damage and workplace accidents.
