Safety Update
Stack Lights With Text and Symbol Options
Onyx Indus-
tries introduced
its customizable
stack lights with
backlit text and
symbol options for
safety-awareness
indication. The
LED indicators
satisfy ANSI
B11.19-2010 sec-
tion 9.2 require-
ments by effec-
tively alerting
machine operators and plant personnel to these potential hazards:
• Exposed pinch points
• High-power lasers
• Active heat zones.
Available in 1.5-in./40-mm to 2.57-
in./65-mm dia. indicators, with standard height lenses and stainless-steel housing, the stack lights serve the safety needs of machine builders and safety-improve- ment initiatives.
The backlit text and symbol option clearly communicates messages. For example, a blue indicator incorporates the IEC laser symbol with text below show- ing “Laser Active.” Also, the backlit text and symbol option is important due to the prevalence of color blindness (to 10 percent in males for red/green).
Available features and options include:
• Red/yellow/green/blue/white LED lights
• 304 stainless-steel housing, plated aluminum base
• 24V DC (sink or source), 115V AC, 230V AC
•Custom powder-coating
• 6-, 12- or 30-ft. PVC jacketed cable or M12 QD connector, or customer specified
• Backlit text option to call out indicator message.
In addition to the backlit text and sym- bols, options include audible safety-hazard buzzers, as well as custom finishes and connectors.

Health/Safety Certification Mark Sends Message
The new ASSP Certification and Accred- itation Institute LLC, an independent entity of the American Society of Safety Profes- sionals (ASSP), is working with companies to certify their safety and health processes to voluntary consensus standards geared to reduce workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. The institute’s certification mark, which confirms adherence to specific standards such as ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, reflects a company’s investment in safety and health management while providing a competitive advantage in the industry.
As secretariat for multiple national and global standards, including ISO 450001, Z10 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines, ASSP plays a key role in developing con- sensus standards that incorporate industry best practices.
According to a survey by the Independ- ent Association of Accredited Registrars, 86 percent of companies that certify with a reputable accreditation organization realize a positive return on investment.
The ASSP Certification and Accreditation Institute, launched this past summer, is working with an accredited third-party registrar to conduct the audits, verify results of the assessment and issue a certification mark when all requirements are met.
OSHA’s Most Common Citations and How to Avoid Them
Each year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) tallies up the citations it has issued and then pub- lishes a list of the 10 most cited standards. At least a half-dozen standards almost always make that list.
Intelex Technologies now is offers a free report, available on its website, telling manufacturers what they need to know
about OSHA’s most common regulatory citations, and how to avoid them. Download the report, which provides compliance checklists for using ladders and scaffolding, a hazard-communications compliance checklist, a lockout/tagout equipment compliance checklist, and more, at tinyurl.com/y7vzxm2b.
Curtain Guards for Hydraulic Presses
Ejection-curtain guarding kits for hydraulic presses, from Rockford Systems LLC, are designed to prevent injuries caused by flying, rolling or sliding debris.
The kits, featuring coiled wire-fabric machine guards, meet the ANSI B11.2 ref 8.2.1. “flying objects” clause, pending results of a risk assessment to determine the likelihood and force potential for throw- ing objects.
The guards can be opened easily to load and inspect a part, and then closed and secured during press operation. And, the 19-gauge-steel coiled wire-fabric guards allow visibility of the machine process without sacrificing operator safety. The fireproof, corrosion-resistant kits come in three standard sizes—40.5, 42.75 and 51 in.—that fit most hydraulic presses, with custom sizes available.
