proper test piece or rod. This proce- dure might include the following steps: • Select the proper test piece deter- mined by the resolution of the sensing field. The test piece typically is supplied with the light-curtain system; if not, use an opaque cylindrical object that has a cross-section no larger than the reso- lution of the sensing field, such as a
straight piece of PVC or steel pipe.
• Indications vary, but typically a green indicator will be on to indicate a
clear sensing field.
• Pass the test piece through the
sensing field in three paths: near the emitter, near the receiver, and midway between the emitter and receiver.
• During each pass, and with the test piece interrupting the defined area, the indicator must turn and remain red for as long as the test piece remains in the sensing field.
Having performed the trip-test pro- cedure, make the required electrical
connections to the guarded machine, referring to the machine documenta- tion and the light-curtain installation manual. Perform the commissioning checkout in combination with the guard- ed machine; a qualified person much ver- ify the operation of the light curtain before placing the safeguarded machine into production.

Rockford Systems, Inc., Rockford, IL, also has introduced a new monthly 2.5-day machine-safeguarding seminar on how to safeguard point-of-operation hazards on all types of metal-fabricating
equipment. The seminar covers inter- pretations of current OSHA and ANSI standards and includes demonstrations of machines under power along with audio-visual presentations. Content is designed for plant managers, safety directors, supervisors, setup people, etc.—anyone responsible for machine safety. Attendees will receive two con- tinuing-education credits.
Rockford Systems has updated its website to include short, informative video clips that demonstrate applications of machine-safeguarding products; a seminar page that offers descriptions of upcoming safety seminars, with online registration; and a catalog, with shop- online functionality, of the company’s products—safety shields, die-safety blocks, interlock switches, signs and labels, etc.
