Hot-dip-galvanized Nexmet 1000 and 1200 AHSS products offer ultra-high strength while maintaining excellent forma- bility for structural and exterior automotive body lightweighting needs, according to company officials, while maintaining the ability to be cold stamped. Nexmet 440EX and 490EX, exposed-surface-quality prod- ucts, combine high yield and tensile strength at thinner gauges to facilitate lightweight designs. AK Steel officials say that the Nexmet AHSS products are gaining traction in the marketplace, and the com- pany expects to supply its first production orders of Nexmet 1000 third-generation AHSS for an upcoming new vehicle platform this year.
AK Steel also offers Ultralume PHS, an aluminized Type 1, heat-treatable, boron steel intended for automotive steel applications where ultra-high strength (~1500 MPa), design flexibility and collision protection are key. These materials are hot stamped to produce ultra-high-strength parts, while simultaneously addressing forming and springback issues experienced in conventional cold-stamped high-strength steels.

New AHSS Weldable Grade Aids in Auto Weight Savings
ArcelorMittal has added to its family of AHSS for automotive with the development of Fortiform 980 Extragal, joining Fortiform 1050 (available in Europe only) and Fortiform 1180. This third-generation double-sided, pure-zinc-galvanized steel eliminates con- cerns with the second-gen. grades, where body engineers had some limitations in using them for parts involved in energy absorption or those with complex shapes, according to ArcelorMittal officials.
Fortiform 980 Extragal, with a tensile- strength of 980-1130 MPa, reportedly is compatible with current automotive-industry welding systems, and was engineered to mitigate typical AHSS challenges such as liquid-metal embrittlement and optimum weld strength. ArcelorMittal has studied
interaction of the steel with resistance spot welding, laser welding, gas metal arc brazing and gas metal arc welding with no signs of surface cracks in critical zones.
“The new Fortiform 980 Extragal (-GI) range of AHSS for cold stamping combines superior formability and ductility at higher strengths that exceed the capabilities of the second-generation AHSS, thus opening
up new opportunities for AHSS in body engineering,” says Hassan Ghassemi-Armaki, lead research engineer for ArcelorMIttals’ Global Research and Development depart- ment in East Chicago, IL. “This is a crucial advantage as carmakers come under pres- sure to further lighten vehicles as a part of their strategy to improve fuel economy.” ArcelorMittal: www.automotive.arcelormittal.com
