Fabrication: Welding Well
Conventional capacitive welders can only supply a DC-output waveform. The variable waveform-type welder can produce an AC waveform, constant-current waveform and a multi-pulse waveform. It even is possible to pro- gram the output to change the polarity of each weld by means of a simple parameter change. Precise repeatability of these waveforms, as depicted in Figs. 5-7, helps ensure high weld quality.
The minimized heat generated due to extremely short weld times, typically 3 to 4 msec, extends the life of the electrodes, which extends even further with the variable- mode welder due to the polarity reversal on each weld. This feature can offset the deformation effects on the electrodes typically caused by MFDC welding.
Important Notes
CD welders are not the welding solution for every appli- cation. However, they offer specific solutions to problems associated with hot stamped steel, dissimilar materials and aluminum. Looking ahead, exotic materials yet to be engi- neered may be welded by CD welders.
The reality: CD welders offer good solutions in the RW world. Just remember, they’re not all the same. Therefore, do your research and find the source that can help you make the right choice for your application. The results will speak
for themselves.
