November 6, 2023Comments
As part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) tentative agreement with Stellantis, the automaker announced plans to reopen its idled Belvidere, IL, assembly plant, according to multiple news sources. The settlement likely will receive a “yes” vote by the UAW.
Stellantis plans to spend $4.8 billion during the next 4 yr. expanding the 5.4-million-sq.-ft. Belvidere plant, to assemble a new midsize truck and manufacture electric-vehicle batteries; it also will add a mega-hub parts-distribution center, according to a UAW press release. Upon completion, the expanded plant is expected to employ as many as 2500 people. “By the end of this agreement, Stellantis will be adding 5000 jobs (at all Stellantis plants). We truly are saving the American dream,” says UAW President Shawn Fain.
The three-part manufacturing operation promises to bring new life to the plant, idled since February 2023.
