Rockwell Issues State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Automotive

Rockwell Automation’s 8th annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report: Automotive Edition reveals that leaders from automotive OEMs and their suppliers remain keenly focused on the pursuit of quality, the impact of process automation, the adoption of smart manufacturing, and the essential role of technology when mitigating risks, navigating workforce challenges, minimizing costs, and boosting production. Among the report’s key findings:
- 85 percent of automotive manufacturers expect to maintain or even increase their workforce due to technology adoption; 64 percent use software to automate processes; and 54 percent are increasing their use of automation to address labor shortages.
- “Minimizing costs” and “improving quality” are the most-cited drivers for accelerating the digital transformation.
- 31 percent of automotive manufacturers either plan to or already invested in artificial-intelligence and machine-learning technologies.
- Indicating that technology can address current issues and act as a catalyst for growth, 42 percent expect to repurpose their existing workforce and 27 percent believe they’ll hire more workers as a result of technology adoption.
- In practice, 35 percent of these businesses report that smart manufacturing has helped mitigate issues with deploying and integrating new technologies, and 29 percent believe smart manufacturing has helped with the lingering impact of the pandemic.
- 97 percent of automotive manufacturers and suppliers report having sustainability and ESG initiatives in place, with 49 percent pursuing these initiatives as a competitive differentiator.
