Desktop Metal Launches ExOne S-Max Flex 3D Printer for Creating Sand Tooling

Desktop Metal has introduced the S-Max Flex--what it calls an “accessible new binder jetting system”—built by combining its technologies and expertise with those of its subsidiary ExOne. The machine is specifically designed to provide foundries with a robust, low-cost means of creating sand tooling for metal-casting applications.

“We designed the S-Max Flex from the ground up leveraging single-pass jetting technology,” says Ric Fulop, co-founder and CEO of Desktop Metal, “with the idea of making premium sand 3D printing accessible to every foundry, so that more companies can take advantage of the benefits of AM 2.0, such as distributed, local production, and remain competitive for the long-term.”

Free 3D Systems eBook Details Benefits of Part Consolidation via Metal AM
3D Systems offers a free download of its ebook, Lower Cost, Boost Efficiency: Reducing Part Count with Additive Manufacturing, which promises help in cost-effectively creating complex designs using 3D metal printing and enabling parts makers the ability to rethink their design and manufacturing processes. The ebook, created with manufacturing executives, managers, engineers and designers in mind, features real-world examples that detail the benefits of part consolidation courtesy of metal additive manufacturing (AM).

United Performance Metals Opens OH AM Solutions Center
United Performance Metals (UPM) has opened its new additive manufacturing (AM) solutions center, which provides new stainless-steel, nickel and titanium build plates customized to any size or machine.  in Hamilton, OH. UPM provides end-to-end supply-chain products and services for the AM market, from feed stock supply management to finished-part manufacturing. The company also offers closed-loop refurbishment of existing build plates through additional milling and grinding, and wire-EDM build-plate removal.

AM-Powder Provider 6K Inc. Receives MA Grant to Fund New UniMelt System
The Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2) recently awarded a $1.5 million grant to 6K Inc., which is expected to boost the manufacturer’s production of AM materials as well as batteries for electric vehicles, grid storage, and consumer electronics. 6K’s UniMelt technology recycles scrap materials or used metal powder or parts and transforms them into metal-AM powder. 6K plans to build a 33,000-sq.-ft. battery center of excellence pre-production facility in North Andover, MA, and the M212 grant will fund the purchase of one new UniMelt system.

Prototype Metal Parts at One-Tenth the Cost
During Caldwell Mfg.’s strategic-planning meeting in 2010, executives looked at what kind of technologies were going to be disruptive, and unanimously agreed that 3D printing would be the key to their success. Today, the firm prints prototype metal parts that would traditionally be cast from zinc or aluminum.
