The conversation in question was with Michael Davenport, executive director of the Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP). When I asked how stampers should approach tooling-related issues regarding forming new steels—die friction, springback, etc.—his best advice: “Don’t go it alone. All of the steel mills have researchers working in this area, and with experience in stamping and die development. Collaborate with your material suppliers and get them involved early.”

When you first started production, your part was perfect, or at least
acceptable in terms of no splits/necks, fitting the fixture,
dimensionally in tolerance, and meeting the required characteristics of
strength, stiffness, weldability, paintability, etc. To achieve this
success, you used the right sheet metal grade and thickness, optimized
press settings, applied the correct type and amount of lube, and had
a perfect die surface.
