SSAB and Gestamp Partner to Develop Fossil-Free Steel for Automotive Parts
November 2, 2023Comments
SSAB has and Gestamp have signed an agreement to partner on developing fossil-free steel for automotive body-in-white and chassis products.
“The fossil-free steel partnership with SSAB will further strengthen Gestamp’s position to develop innovative and sustainable-designed automotive components to achieve increasingly safer, lighter vehicles, thereby reducing energy consumption and environmental impact,” says Gestamp chief procurement officer Javier Imaz. “It also will strongly contribute to Gestamp’s sustainability targets.”
“We are delighted to welcome Gestamp as SSAB fossil-free steel partner,” adds Tony Harris, head of sales and business development at SSAB Europe. “Together we will support the automotive industry in delivering the demanding CO2 reductions that producers and consumers are demanding, and we will supply more sustainable cars to the end user.”
SSAB aims to revolutionize the steelmaking process to deliver fossil-free steel to the market at a commercial scale in 2026, and to largely eliminate CO2 emissions from its own operations in around 2030. The by-product from its steelmaking process—replacing the use of coking coal with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen— would be only water.
