The venerable stamping die. Rarely is a tool so hand-in-glove with its product. The die makes a mirror impression of its resulting part with forces as light as ¼ ton and as much as 4400 tons, forming metal components used in nearly every industry from appliance and automotive to wireless communications.

Even more venerable: the tool- and diemaker who builds the die and prepares it for service—for as many as 7 million strokes.

Nomination form fillableMetalForming is proud to premier its Tool & Die ebook, an homage to the stamping die and its creators. In the MetalForming Tool & Die ebook, we lead readers and viewers through the major stages of a metal forming die from design through build to storage. The ebook combines the motion and interactivity of electronic media with the longevity of a book, with bold imagery, video and animations; relevant excerpts of topical articles; and ample links to fuller articles for a deeper dive into specific topics.

You will get a tutorial on the design and testing of a strip layout in video. We dissect the anatomy of a die, examining its components and their functions. We’ve included an interactive tool- and die-maintenance checklist, a helpful glossary with video links illustrating the term in action, and a directory of tool- and diemaker companies supplying the metal forming industry.

Nominate, Educate

And … in the MetalForming Tool & Die ebook we peer into the faces of working tool- and diemakers, and hear their sage advice and lessons learned. Toolmakers, that’s where you come in.

Please send me a short description of one of the most important lessons you’ve learned—either from a trusted mentor or … via the hard way. Email one or two paragraphs to me; put “Toolmaker lesson learned” in the subject line, by Oct. 16.

Company managers, please send me nominations of your MVT—most valuable toolmaker—who has contributed substantially. He or she can be the experienced journeyman who accumulated a wealth of knowledge over a career, or a new and eager craftsperson who has already shown great potential. Submit your nomination in a format similar to the form at left, by Oct. 16. I look forward to hearing from youMF
